Prepare for university-style study through the sciences
Future Scholars: Sciences is a two-week academic programme for students aged 14–17 who want to experience a more independent and analytical approach to learning. Students develop five core areas of academic practice: Lecture Skills, Academic Writing, Presentation Skills, Critical Thinking and Research Skills.
These skills are explored through scientific contexts and subject tasters in Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, Neuroscience and Pharmacology. Students learn to engage critically with new information, evaluate evidence, develop research questions and communicate complex ideas clearly.

What you'll study
Five academic skills for future study
Each module develops a distinct area of academic practice. Within the Sciences pathway, activities, examples and challenges are tailored to scientific study, while all five skills are brought together through the Time to Shine research project.

Module 01
Lecture Skills
University learning often requires students to listen, process information and identify what matters in real time. Students develop techniques for active listening, structured note-taking, identifying key ideas and evidence, and turning lecture notes into useful material for further study.

Module 02
Academic Writing
Students explore how academic writing differs from everyday communication. They learn to organise ideas, construct clear arguments and use evidence appropriately, with particular attention to communicating scientific ideas and findings accurately and clearly.

Module 03
Presentation Skills
Students develop confidence communicating ideas through both spoken and visual formats. Sessions explore presentation structure, delivery, academic posters, visual communication and responding effectively to questions.

Module 04
Critical Thinking
Students learn to question information rather than simply accept it. Through scientific examples and case studies, they consider the strength of evidence, identify assumptions, compare competing explanations and explore concepts such as correlation and causation.

Module 05
Research Skills
Students explore how academic research develops from an initial question. They practise refining research questions, finding and evaluating sources, organising evidence, recording information and drawing conclusions that can be justified by what they have found.
The signature experience
Research it. Question it. Present it.
Throughout the two weeks, students work in groups of three on a science-focused research question of their own choosing. They refine their question, investigate appropriate sources, evaluate evidence and decide how best to communicate their findings.
The programme culminates in the joint Time to Shine Presentation Ceremony, where Sciences and Humanities students come together in an Oxford academic setting. Each group presents its research through both an academic poster and an oral presentation.

Students stay in en-suite or shared college rooms within a real Oxford college, with full board and a resident welfare team on site 24/7.
A maximum of eight students per class. Small groups mean every student is known, challenged and supported individually.
Yes. Every student leaves with a certificate of completion and a personalised written reference from their tutor — useful for school and university applications.
Residential programme includes:

No. Future Scholars is a Summer Boarding Courses programme. We use the buildings and grounds of a University of Oxford college so students can live and study in an authentic college setting, but the course is designed and delivered by Summer Boarding Courses. Summer Boarding Courses contracts the use of these facilities and has no formal connection with the University of Oxford or its colleges, and they do not deliver, partner in, or endorse our programmes.
