Discover Earlscliffe Summer

Earlscliffe is a UNESCO School located in the charming coastal town of Folkestone, just 54 minutes from London and a short walk from the beach and town centre.

Operating as a top-performing independent sixth form college during the academic year, Earlscliffe offers a personalised, academically ambitious environment. Housed in beautifully restored buildings dating back to 1870, the school consistently ranks among the leading coeducational boarding schools in the southeast of England for A-level results.

As a proud UNESCO School, Earlscliffe actively engages in European educational collaboration, offering students a globally minded learning experience.

Our Academic Approach

At SBC, learning goes beyond the classroom. Students don’t just listen – they take part. Through practical activities and projects, they get the chance to apply what they’ve learned and build real understanding, with guidance from supportive tutors.

The programme also helps students grow key soft skills they’ll need in life – like  critical thinking, leadership, communication, and teamwork. These are all part of programme here at SBC.

In class, students are encouraged to speak up, solve problems together, and take ownership of their learning – much like they might in future study or work settings. Our tutors help guide and inspire them along the way.

Social Programme

Social Activities

There is something for everyone on the schedule at Earlscliffe as it offers a balance of sports, cultural events, arts & crafts, enjoyable games, walks, and competitions. After the lessons for the day are over, all of these activities are planned and overseen by our staff.

On-site, students participate in table tennis, billiards, badminton, volleyball, and basketball. Karaoke nights, football, softball, “Earlscliffe’s Got Talent,” swimming, house contests, themed disco nights, “Minute To Win It,” tennis, “Scavenger Hunt,” rounders, “Jeux sans Frontières,” “Bake Off,” and quiz nights are just a few of the supervised daytime and evening activities we provide.

Frequent beach excursions during the day and in the evening are a well-liked feature of the week’s events.

We are lucky to be close to the beach, the creative Creative Quarter, and Folkestone’s town centre with all of its shops.

Excursions

Earlscliffe students will enjoy full‑day trips, as well as evening trips to bowling, laser tag or the cinema. On Sundays students may visit: the world‑famous cathedral city of Canterbury, take a river boat tour; go ice‑skating, visit Bluewater shopping centre; a theme park, Margate and Dreamland.

Students will also be able to travel on the high‑speed, direct train to London accompanied by our staff. During the summer we have previously visited some of the capital’s most famous landmarks and museums, including the London Eye; the Tower of London; the British Museum; the London Dungeons; and the Natural History Museum.

Each year excursions are reviewed in order to provide the best and enriching opportunities available. During excursions, students will also benefit from some remote-supervised free time in small groups.

Optional Extras

During summer, you can enhance your experience by choosing one or more of our optional extras which offer something for everyone, from paddle boarding to paintball and theatre to the magic of Harry Potter. Please note the experiences listed below are an optional extra and not part of the standard programme. These activities can be booked at an additional cost and spaces are limited.

Please add these options to your package at the point of booking.

For an additional weekly cost students can enjoy an extra 4 hours of English in small group lessons or extra 4 hours of English in a one-to-one setting.

Prices:

English in a one-to-one setting – £325 Per Week
English in small group lessons – £195 Per Week

On-site sports include table tennis, billiards, badminton, basketball and volleyball. Karaoke evenings, football, softball, a “Summer of Talent” performance, swimming, themed disco nights, tennis, mini-golf, dry slope tobogganing, “jeux sans frontières,” and quiz nights are just a few of our supervised afternoon and evening activities. Regular beach walks are a well-liked activity during the week.

After the school day’s lessons are over, these sports and activities start to be offered from mid-afternoon.

Earlscliffe is fortunate to be situated nearby Folkestone’s town centre and shops, the Creative Quarter, the beach, and the coastline, all of which provide our children with opportunities for relaxation and discovery.

Given the uncertain weather at this time of year, our Easter programme does offer more travel and indoor activities than in summer.

The weekly excursion to London, which takes only 54 minutes and leaves from the neighbouring Folkestone Central station, is a highlight of the Earlscliffe easter programme.

On Sundays, we may also travel to Leeds Castle and Bluewater, the renowned cathedral city of Canterbury, or enjoy a riverboat cruise. There will be some unstructured time for students in small groups (Juniors are always supervised).

Earlscliffe Summer School Accommodation and Meals

The eight Victorian and Edwardian buildings on the Earlscliffe campus have been renovated to provide comfortable residential and learning spaces. Located in Folkestone’s West End, Earlscliffe is within walking distance of the beach and the Leas promenade. The town center, with its shops and high-speed train link to London St Pancras, is also nearby.

Earlscliffe offers students quality student residences. Girls and boys live in separate, supervised accommodations. Rooms are mostly twin with a few select single or triple rooms and all have en-suite WC and showers. The ‘in-town’ campus means that students can walk between their classes, to meals, accommodation, and activities with ease.

Meals are held in the dining room. We offer a varied menu with a mixture of British and international cuisine. Dietary requirements can be catered to upon special request in advance of your course.
