Explore medicine while developing your English
Medicine is a two-week English-language programme for students interested in the human body, health and healthcare. Students encounter accessible themes from anatomy, physiology, diagnosis and medical ethics while developing the language needed to describe medical ideas and discuss cases.
Learning uses case studies, discussion, roleplay and collaborative activities to help students practise asking questions, organising information and communicating health-related ideas clearly.

What you'll study
Explore the language and ideas of medicine
Students encounter selected themes from medicine and healthcare while developing the English needed to discuss the human body, communicate information and consider different medical questions. The programme is introductory rather than professional clinical training.

Explore selected body systems and consider how structures and functions work together, developing scientific and medical vocabulary while explaining processes in English.

Clinical Reasoning & Communication
Through case studies and roleplay, students consider how healthcare professionals gather information, ask questions, identify relevant details and communicate clearly about health and illness.

Explore questions connected with patient choice, confidentiality, public health and developments in medicine, practising how to explain and justify different viewpoints in English.

Explore a medical question at Time to Shine
Students work collaboratively on a medicine- or health-themed project, organising information from different sources and deciding how best to communicate their thinking.
At Time to Shine, students present their project in English, explaining their ideas clearly and responding to questions from others.

No prior study is required. The course is designed for students with an interest in medicine, whether starting out or preparing for university-level study.
All workshop and project resources are provided. Students can choose to bring standard study items such as pens, notebooks, and a laptop or tablet for project work.
Yes. The programme includes clinical simulations and hands-on workshops where you’ll practise skills such as patient assessment and basic medical procedures.
Although there’s a lot to absorb, our compassionate teachers can adapt the level of difficulty according to each student’s comfort with English and ability to absorb new information.
An intermediate level (B1) or above is recommended in order to participate effectively in Medicine at Dukes Cambridge summer school.
All residential staff are DBS-checked and trained, with a high staff-to-student ratio and 24/7 pastoral support.
