Dukes Cambridge Students Take On London

Every so often a day comes along that students talk about for the rest of the summer, and Monday’s excursion to London was surely one of them. The weather was lovely from the outset, making it the perfect day to head into the capital, and the students were in wonderful spirits before they had even boarded. There is a certain thrill to a big day out with friends, and that sense of anticipation was there in every smile as the group set off.

With the day given over entirely to the excursion, there were no academic sessions, and instead the city itself became the classroom. The students began in Covent Garden, where a stretch of free time let them wander the shops and restaurants at their own pace. Many took the opportunity to pick up souvenirs for family and friends back home, a small and thoughtful reminder of the people they are missing while they make the most of their summer here. It was a relaxed, happy start that let everyone settle into the day.

From there, students were given a choice that neatly reflected the different things that spark their curiosity. Some opted to visit the world-renowned British Museum, losing themselves among its treasures, while others joined a walking tour that took in an impressive roll-call of London landmarks. Their route carried them past Chinatown, along Whitehall, up to Buckingham Palace and by Big Ben, giving them a real feel for the history and grandeur of the city. Offering that choice meant every student could shape the day around their own interests, and both groups returned full of stories.

The day built to a memorable finale as everyone came together to ride the London Eye. Rising slowly above the Thames, students took in sweeping views across the capital, and cameras were out in force as they captured the skyline and, just as often, one another. The excitement in the air was infectious, and it was a fitting high point, quite literally, to cap off the adventure.

What shone through most across the whole day was the warmth between the students. The trip gave them endless opportunities to spend time together, explore somewhere new and simply enjoy each other’s company, and those shared experiences are exactly how firm friendships are built. As one member of staff observed, the students are making the most of every opportunity to experience new places together, and it showed in the easy laughter and the memories they were busy creating.

When the group finally made their way back to Cambridge, tired but happy, there was one last treat in store. Everyone gathered to share pizza together, a relaxed and cheerful end to a full day, and the perfect chance to swap highlights before heading off to rest. It rounded off a fun and memorable day beautifully, and left the students already looking forward to what the rest of the week would bring.

Days like this capture so much of what a summer with us is about. Beyond the landmarks and the photographs, it was the sense of togetherness, the small kindnesses and the shared sense of adventure that made it special. Our Dukes Cambridge students embraced every moment of their day in the capital, and returned with a little more confidence, a few more friends and a great many memories to treasure.
