Ages 12 – 16
General English is ideal for students who wish to improve their English for use in everyday situations, as well as for academic purposes. Our tutors use a broad range of modern teaching methodologies that focus on developing confidence and ability in English, giving students the tools that they need to both communicate and study effectively. Activating language through usage is central to language learning, so students will always practice what they have learned during their lessons with the engaging and challenging tasks provided by their teachers.
Through our dynamic and communicative lessons, students will develop their ability to use appropriate vocabulary and grammar in both a spoken and written form. General English builds on all language skills and gives the tools needed to use English effectively in the many scenarios that students are presented with, including in practical and educational settings.
We strongly believe that students respond best to an environment that enables them to produce, practice and create in English. Therefore, we provide a student-centred environment in the classroom and, through being communicative, students can develop their confidence in using English in meaningful situations.
Being able to use English successfully is not only a question of choosing the appropriate register, vocabulary and grammar but also of being able to understand, evaluate and critique information available and to respond appropriately to others. Collaboration and communication are key skills that our students develop through participation in authentic and challenging tasks. Such skills are useful for further study in any discipline.
The ability to communicate your thoughts and opinions effectively is an important skill for achieving academic and professional success. Our Time to Shine programme involves collaborative project work, including formal presentations, debates, sales and advertising promotion and a multi-media presentation. We provide a supportive and collaborative environment that gives students the freedom to explore projects creatively and independently, giving them the opportunity to present their ideas with confidence and passion.
Eton College’s first module consists of a range of projects that aim to challenge and engage the students. Existing knowledge of the English language is developed through a range of creative sessions which include collaborative tasks, projects and activities. Students gain confidence to use English more effectively through communication, speaking and interaction.
In the second module at Eton – Time to Shine, students are challenged with projects that consist of creative, challenging and communicative projects that encompass 21st-century skills. These can include things like presentations, team challenges and competitions within the class.
Finally, students take part in the English in Use module activities that are mostly dynamic and fun sessions where there is a focus on vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar as well as reading and writing utilising the communicative methodology. Students are given the opportunity yo use this to participate in activities and tasks that encourage creativity and collaboration within their class to mimic real-world experiences.
Modules are given for example purposes and are subject to change.
