The past couple of days at Oxford College have brought a real sense of momentum as we head into the second half of the week. With bright skies and plenty of warm summer weather, the atmosphere across campus has been energised and cheerful. Students are not only enjoying the fresh air and beautiful surroundings but are also really throwing themselves into every opportunity on offer.
Academically, the spotlight has firmly turned toward preparations for the much-anticipated Time to Shine ceremony this Friday. Students have begun shaping their presentations, performances and pitches, showcasing not just what they’ve learned but also how much they’ve grown in confidence. In Global Leadership, for instance, one group has taken a creative route by preparing their own short play to present to their peers. It’s wonderful to see the range of interpretations across subjects, with each student carving their own unique approach.
The Law class had a particularly exciting day on Tuesday with an excursion to a real courtroom. Students explored what life in the legal profession might be like—right down to trying on the traditional wigs and courtroom attire. This hands-on experience offered a rare insight into the legal world and sparked plenty of thoughtful discussion afterwards.
On Wednesday, it was the turn of our medical students to get stuck into something equally immersive. Their visit to Oxford Brookes University’s medical simulation centre gave them a realistic taste of clinical training. They practised wound cleaning techniques, applied oxygen masks to medical dummies, and tested each other’s blood pressure and temperature. One student was especially impressed with the hospital-standard hygiene session, where they learnt to wash their hands properly and then checked the results under blue light—a surprisingly fun but very effective reminder of the importance of cleanliness in healthcare.
Evenings on campus have been just as eventful and engaging. Tuesday’s Societies Evening at Wycliffe offered a range of student-led clubs and sessions including circuits, karaoke, jewellery making, badminton and quizzes. These sessions are a great chance for students to unwind in their own way, connect over shared interests, and try something new outside the classroom.
Wednesday night brings one of the most anticipated events of the week: the Trashion Show. This creative and good-humoured event challenges students to transform everyday rubbish into fashion statements. From bold accessories to fully constructed outfits, students always impress with their imagination, teamwork and confidence as they take to the catwalk.
There’s been a noticeable boost in student morale throughout the week, and it’s been lovely to see how supportive they are of one another, whether that’s during academic rehearsals or cheering each other on during evening events. The sense of community here is as strong as ever, and the warm summer weather has only added to the relaxed and happy atmosphere.
As we move closer to the end of the week, it’s clear that students are finding their stride—balancing focus and fun, learning and laughter. Whether they’ve spent the day in a courtroom, a medical lab or a design studio made of recycled packaging, the past few days have offered plenty of memorable experiences and chances for personal growth.
