SUMMER BOARDING COURSES
Weekend Wonders and Creative Challenges at Headington School
The past weekend at Headington has been full of variety, laughter, and resilience, with our students proving once again that a little weather isn’t enough to slow them down. Saturday brought some classic British rainfall in the morning, but by the afternoon the clouds had parted, leaving behind a fresh atmosphere and a slightly soggy lawn—perfect for indoor adventures and team fun.
Even with the wet grass limiting outdoor options, the campus buzzed with energy. The sports hall became the hub of activity, filled with cheers and playful competition as students took part in basketball, volleyball, and bench ball. The lively atmosphere was a reflection of the students’ ability to adapt and enjoy each other’s company regardless of the setting. Alongside the physical fun, there was plenty to keep the mind sharp too—logic puzzles tested problem-solving skills while a photo challenge encouraged students to get creative and see their surroundings from a new perspective.
Academically, students made great strides across various areas. Our aspiring medics had an especially impactful experience, learning CPR under the guidance of our visiting first aid expert, John. His praise for the group’s focus and enthusiasm was well earned, as students practised diligently and took the session seriously. “Their performance was fantastic,” he commented, clearly impressed by their attitude and skill.
Meanwhile, in the English department, Grace’s class worked on expressing daily routines and questions in English. Paired speaking activities kept the classroom buzzing, and it was wonderful to see confidence building as the students helped each other along. Elsewhere, Al’s class used their lesson time to rehearse for the Eco-Tourism “Time to Shine” presentations. Their dedication was evident in both delivery and content—the message was heartfelt, and the teamwork behind the scenes truly paid off.
Though the weather meant the much-anticipated “Staff Safari” had to be postponed, the students didn’t miss out on evening fun. The lecture hall transformed into a cosy cinema for a screening of Knight and Day, where laughter echoed as the group relaxed together. In the main hall, Mr and Mrs Smith proved equally popular, and the snacks and soft drinks helped complete the experience. It was a relaxed, enjoyable way to end a changeable day.
Sunday brought more sunshine and a return to some outdoor options, with Oxford enjoying a mild, pleasant 22°C under patchy clouds. Students could choose from activities like badminton, escape rooms, bracelet making, and another round of photo challenges. Whether teaming up to solve puzzles or quietly focusing on crafting, everyone found something that suited their mood and allowed for connection and self-expression.
The day’s academic highlight came as students delivered their ‘Time to Shine’ projects in front of their peers. These presentations are always a proud moment, and this time was no exception. The Eco-Tourism group stood out again, showing not just knowledge of the topic but a real understanding of how to work together to convey their ideas. The collaboration within groups was evident, and the audience responded warmly to their efforts.
As the sun dipped lower, the evening brought with it a burst of creativity with the ‘Trashion Show’. This house-based competition challenged students to design and model outfits using only discarded materials. With piles of recyclables to work with, teams threw themselves into the task with a fantastic level of enthusiasm—some students even jumped into the rubbish heaps to find the perfect materials. One group channelled the 1990s, complete with a cardboard guitar, and each look that came down the runway had its own unique charm.
The fashion show was full of colour and applause, with students cheering for each other and celebrating the ingenuity on display. Although the show had to end a little earlier than planned due to a student feeling unwell, the way the group responded showed real maturity and kindness. Everyone exited calmly, with care and respect for one another. It was a small moment that said a great deal about the strength of the community forming here.
As the weekend wrapped up, what stood out most wasn’t just the activities or the sunshine returning—it was the sense of togetherness, flexibility, and support that defined every moment. Whether solving puzzles, performing CPR, strutting in recycled fashion or simply watching a film with friends, students made the most of their time and continued to grow in confidence and empathy. It’s been a weekend full of positive memories and lasting connections.
