Sunshine, Friendships and Farewells: A Brilliant Weekend at Earlscliffe

The past few days at Earlscliffe have been lively, emotional and filled with sunshine—the perfect backdrop for what has been a significant few days on campus. With the sun setting on our first two weeks together, students have been making the most of every moment, whether travelling further afield, celebrating achievements in class, or simply enjoying each other’s company as the term’s first chapter draws to a close.

Wednesday began in style with a visit to London, taking in iconic views from the top of the London Eye and exploring the capital’s key landmarks. After the buzz of the city, we took time to relax seaside with a trip to the beach, followed by padel matches and quick-footed football sessions on the astroturf. The energy was high, and it didn’t stop there—Thursday evening brought the whole school together for a brilliant session of Laser Tag. Laughter and teamwork made it a highlight of the week, with students working together and showing real camaraderie.

In the classroom, there were equally exciting developments. Students across subjects threw themselves into debates, particularly during a lively session focused on UNESCO topics. There was thoughtful discussion, well-researched arguments, and a sense of maturity in how students engaged with global themes. Meanwhile, those enrolled in the UniPrep course had an enriching day in Oxford, where they explored Christ Church College and took in the history and academic atmosphere of one of the world’s most respected universities. The visit gave them a sense of what lies ahead should they choose to pursue higher education in the UK, and it sparked lots of conversation on the journey home.

By Friday, it was time to reflect and celebrate all that has been achieved over the past two weeks. Students presented projects and shared what they’d learned, and it was clear how much effort and thought had gone into their work. These presentations weren’t just a showcase of academic progress—they were a reminder of how much confidence many students have gained in such a short space of time. Friday evening ended on a high with our first disco of the summer. With music, dancing, and plenty of smiles, it was the perfect way to say farewell to those leaving us and to mark the friendships that have been formed. “There’s a lot of love here at Earlscliffe,” staff noted, and the warmth was felt all around as goodbyes were shared and promises made to stay in touch.

The weekend brings a shift in pace, but the fun continues. On Saturday, those not heading to or from airports will spend the afternoon playing mini golf on Folkestone’s Harbour Arm—a favourite spot with views over the Channel and a lovely atmosphere. Later, new arrivals will be welcomed with a BBQ and some casual games, starting to build the connections that will carry us through the next week. The sense of community at Earlscliffe is always evolving, and it’s heartening to see returning students helping newcomers settle in with such ease.

Sunday offers a gentler rhythm. We’ll be heading out for a riverboat tour through the historic heart of Canterbury, taking in the Cathedral and enjoying lunch outdoors in one of the city’s green spaces. The afternoon is relaxed, offering a balance between culture and rest before we return to campus for house night activities. Whether that means pamper sessions, a movie, FIFA matches, pool, or just chatting in the common areas, students will have time to recharge and reconnect before a new academic week begins on Monday.

As always, the atmosphere here is one of warmth, support and enthusiasm. It’s never easy to say goodbye, especially when such strong friendships have formed, but the sense of belonging and shared experience means many of these connections will continue well beyond this summer. With new students arriving and our next week ready to begin, there’s a renewed buzz of anticipation—and we can’t wait to see what comes next.
