SUMMER BOARDING COURSES
New Friendships and Sunny Beginnings at Earlscliffe
The week began with the arrival of students from all around the world, bringing with them an air of anticipation and excitement. It’s been wonderful to see how quickly they’ve adapted to their surroundings. From the moment they stepped onto campus, there’s been a lightness to the atmosphere—helped along by warm sunshine and a gentle breeze that’s made time outdoors all the more inviting.
In these first days, the garden has become a central meeting point. It’s here that students have started to find their feet, with the sounds of chatter and laughter growing stronger each hour. Icebreaker games in the back garden set the tone for what’s to come. From initial hesitations to open laughter, students have been quick to form new connections. One student who had arrived barely speaking soon found themselves leading a team with growing confidence—a small but powerful reminder of how fast comfort can grow in the right environment.
Academic sessions officially began with the focus centred around identity and country of origin. These sessions were more than simple introductions—they were thoughtful and reflective, encouraging students to share their backgrounds and hear from others. One student shared, “I’ve never spoken about my country like this in English before, it feels good to be understood.” Another commented, “I didn’t realise how different but also how similar we all are.” These conversations sparked a sense of empathy and interest that has already started shaping a connected and curious classroom environment.
Outside the classroom, wellbeing and social interaction have been prioritised from day one. From icebreaker sessions to more structured activities like Taskmaster-style challenges, the focus has been on helping students feel at ease and part of something shared. The Taskmaster games were a particular highlight—full of lively challenges that brought out humour, creativity, and collaboration. One quieter student surprised everyone by confidently stepping up as a team leader, guiding their group through a funny and well-received performance that ended in cheers. These kinds of moments go a long way in building trust and camaraderie in a new setting.
It’s still very early in the course, but the signs are already clear: this is a group that’s ready to grow together. English is flowing naturally as students find common ground, not just in lessons, but in gardens, common rooms, and evening chats. The sunshine has certainly helped, making outdoor activities inviting and relaxing, and giving everyone more opportunities to connect.
As the week unfolds, there’s a sense that this shared experience is already starting to take shape—not just as a summer course, but as a time of real connection, self-discovery, and early steps towards independence. The students have shown openness, kindness, and a willingness to try new things. With that spirit, the days ahead promise to be rich in learning, laughter, and friendships that will carry through long after the summer ends.
