SUMMER BOARDING COURSES
Loops, Laughs and Lazy Evenings
The Headington campus has been buzzing with energy this week. With the sun making a cheerful appearance throughout the day, students were up early and ready for something a little different. After breakfast, they set off for one of the week’s most eagerly awaited excursions: a full-day visit to the ever-popular Thorpe Park.
There was a clear sense of anticipation as students gathered outside, clutching their packed lunches and chatting about what lay ahead. The journey itself was filled with excitement, but nothing quite compared to the reaction when the coaches pulled up at the gates of Thorpe Park. The sound of rollercoasters rumbling overhead and the scent of popcorn and sweets in the air instantly set the tone for the day.
For those unfamiliar, Thorpe Park is one of the UK’s most well-known amusement parks, home to some of the most exhilarating rides in the country. The students had the chance to explore in small groups, either with a staff member or independently, depending on their preference. This flexibility meant that everyone could tailor the day to suit their own sense of adventure.
Plenty of students went straight for the park’s biggest attractions. Stealth, with its dramatic 0 to 80 mph launch, was a favourite among the adrenaline chasers, as was The Swarm, where riders soared through the air with nothing beneath their feet. Others gravitated towards Saw – The Ride, which lived up to its dramatic theme with steep drops and tight turns. Colossus, with its iconic 10-loop track, also drew a dedicated crowd eager to test their limits.
For students who preferred a slightly less intense pace, there was still plenty to enjoy. Rides like Tidal Wave provided a good soaking and even more laughter, while the atmosphere of the park itself—complete with music, games, and snacks—offered a fun and vibrant place to explore. Whether winning a plush toy at a carnival stall or trying out a new flavour of ice cream, everyone found their own way to make the most of the day.
By mid-afternoon, groups reunited at the coaches, tired but full of stories to share. The journey back to Headington was a lively one, with students comparing their favourite rides and reliving the most unexpected moments of the day. Back on campus just after 6pm, they were welcomed by a classic dinner of fish and chips, which couldn’t have come at a better time after such an active day.
Each house hosted a relaxed evening, giving everyone the chance to wind down together. Some played board games, others curled up with a film, and a few simply enjoyed having time to chat and reflect. It was a gentle and welcome contrast to the excitement of the day, helping students settle back into the comfort of their SBC home.
Days like these remind us how valuable shared experiences are, both for building friendships and for growing in confidence. Whether conquering a fear of heights or simply stepping out of their usual routine, each student took something from the day—and returned with new memories that will be talked about for the rest of the summer.
