SUMMER BOARDING COURSES
Laughter, Learning, and a Touch of Rain at Canford
As we moved through the final days of July here at Canford, a bit of rain did nothing to dampen the energy on campus. There’s a real buzz among the students, not only in anticipation of the upcoming trip to London, but also from the engaging activities and classes that have filled the day. The grounds may have been wet, but the atmosphere remained bright and full of momentum.
In the classroom, students continued to explore their subjects in thoughtful and practical ways. English lessons focused on plays, with students learning about how quotation is used in dramatic texts. There was a lot of curiosity in the room as they explored the different ways dialogue shapes character and story. STEM sessions brought a more hands-on challenge, with students learning about buoyancy through boat-building experiments. Using miniature boats and weights, they tested how different designs could stay afloat—an activity that sparked both excitement and plenty of discussion as some models held strong and others… not so much. Over in art, students continued work on their papier-mâché projects, shaping their creations with patience and care. The room was full of quiet focus, broken only by the occasional shared smile or helpful suggestion.
Though the weather kept us mostly indoors, it made for a cosy and communal feeling across campus. In the afternoon, students could choose from a range of activities designed to support their wellbeing and encourage social connection. There was clay modelling and bracelet-making for those feeling creative, while others chose to build with Lego or take part in a nature walk, making the most of the fresh air between showers. Football proved a popular option, with plenty of energy on the pitch despite the damp grass.
The highlight of the day, though, came in the evening with the much-anticipated talent show. Students stepped up to the stage with confidence and enthusiasm, showcasing their skills in singing, dancing, and more. One student from Scotland gave a particularly memorable performance, bringing the audience together with both pride and applause. The staff also got involved, with a light-hearted karaoke and comedy segment that had everyone laughing. It was a moment of shared joy that really summed up the spirit of Canford: supportive, inclusive, and full of fun.
There’s a lot to look forward to, especially with the trip to London just around the corner. But even as excitement builds for what’s next, it’s clear that these quieter, rainy days have offered something special—space for connection, laughter, and meaningful moments of learning.
As the week continues, the sense of community here only grows stronger. Whether students are experimenting with boats, crafting with friends, or cheering each other on from the front row, they’re building memories that will last far beyond the summer.
