SUMMER BOARDING COURSES
From Market Deals to Space Crimes: A Lively Week in Cambridge
As the summer school at SBC Cambridge edges closer to its final stretch, there’s a clear sense of connection and celebration among the students and staff. Though the skies have offered another bout of rain, it’s done nothing to dampen the cheerful mood on campus. The bonds formed over the past weeks are shining through, and while there’s a tinge of sadness as we approach the end, it’s accompanied by a shared feeling of pride in what everyone has achieved together.
Tuesday brought with it a particularly engaging set of academic sessions, with every class offering a different way to bring learning to life. The Business students spent their morning in the heart of Cambridge’s bustling Market Square, each team tasked with securing the best bargain possible using just £10. The real challenge was not just in the buying, but in the persuading. Teams chatted with local vendors to understand their businesses before returning to present their findings and negotiation techniques. It was a brilliant way to blend economic thinking with communication and practical problem-solving.
Meanwhile, the Medicine and Science & Tech classes came together for an imaginative joint challenge: a medical-themed murder mystery. Groups were given clues based on medical data and scientific evidence, requiring teamwork and deduction as they pieced together the case. The crossover allowed students to mix beyond their usual classes, and it quickly turned into a lively and collaborative atmosphere. One staff member noted just how much laughter and energy filled the room as the teams bounced ideas off each other, all while sharpening their analytical skills.
In Social Sciences, students turned their attention to the science of sleep and memory. In groups, they conducted interviews with both staff and fellow students to investigate whether men and women have different sleep needs. The exercise encouraged thoughtful questioning and active listening. To explore memory further, the class moved on to discuss — and test — muscle memory, with juggling as a practical example. It was a fantastic moment of shared curiosity and light-hearted experimentation, as students found themselves dropping balls mid-sentence and learning through movement.
That evening, the energy continued with a full school social event: a space-themed murder mystery. The students were whisked away to a fictional spaceship, where the unfortunate Alien Thom had met a suspicious end. All of the college mentors took on mysterious roles, each with a backstory and possible motive, and it was down to the students to interview, interrogate and piece together the puzzle. The atmosphere was buzzing with speculation and teamwork, and the students truly threw themselves into the story.
The following day, Wednesday, continued the theme of practical, memorable learning. One class welcomed a specialist forensics team, giving students a chance to step into the shoes of investigators. Using UV lights, fingerprint scanners and footprint analysis, they worked to solve another mock murder, this time with even more advanced tools and techniques. It was a stand-out session, offering not only hands-on experience but a glimpse into real-world forensic work.
Another class focused on medical simulation, using a high-tech dummy to practise various wound-closing techniques. With a calm but focused mood, students took turns suturing different types of simulated injuries, gaining insight into precision and care in medical settings. Both sessions highlighted the variety and depth of learning the students have experienced, with an emphasis on practical application and skill development.
Throughout these days, even with the occasional showers, the mood on campus has been light, fun and connected. Students have been full of stories from their classes and evening events, eager to share what they’ve learned or who they interviewed in their latest group challenge. Staff have remarked how well the cohort has bonded, with many students now confidently moving between different social circles and activities.
As we enter the final few days, there’s a clear sense that the students have not only deepened their academic understanding but also their independence and confidence. Whether negotiating with market traders, cracking a spaceship murder, or learning to suture a wound, these moments have left a strong impression. And above all, the shared laughter and teamwork will no doubt be what they remember most.
