SUMMER BOARDING COURSES
Creativity, Culture, and Community in Week Four at Earlscliffe
Week four at Earlscliffe has been anything but ordinary. Even with a few drops of rain, the energy around campus has stayed bright and upbeat, with plenty of laughter echoing through the halls and gardens. The weather hasn’t slowed anyone down—in fact, it’s only added to the sense of fun and adventure that has come to define this summer’s atmosphere.
Monday set the tone for the week with one of the most imaginative and entertaining challenges yet. In a celebration of sustainability and teamwork, students rolled up their sleeves and turned junk into joy, transforming everyday materials into their very own racing vehicles. With cardboard boxes, empty Pringles tubes, glue, and plenty of paint, students drew inspiration from everywhere—from German engineering to Barbie and Ferrari flair. As one team member joked, “There’s nothing that some paint and glue can’t add to a cardboard box!” The resulting creations were equal parts ingenious and hilarious, with the final race providing a brilliant highlight. Our Instagram (@earlscliffe_shortcourses) captured it all—parents and friends are invited to take a look and pick their favourites!
The fun didn’t stop there. That evening, students gathered for Rock and Roll Bingo, a much-loved event that had everyone on their feet (or in fits of laughter). With rounds that included identifying songs sung entirely in cat meows and guessing the staff’s favourite tracks, the night offered equal parts absurdity and charm. Whether or not anyone won a full house, everyone left with a smile.
Tuesday promised even more excitement. While the blog goes live just ahead of the full day’s activities, the campus buzzed with anticipation. Four separate excursions were planned, giving students the chance to explore different corners of London’s world-famous museum scene. These visits not only enrich students’ cultural awareness but also give them a chance to explore the city in smaller groups with their peers. Whether it’s the design treasures at the V&A, the wonders of science, or the stories of the past, there’s always something to inspire and spark conversation on these trips.
Meanwhile, students in the Breaking Digital course were gearing up for a special session with an industry guest speaker. This visit is set to give them insight into how digital innovation is shaping careers and culture today. Hearing directly from someone working in the field helps ground their classroom learning in real-world application and broadens their understanding of the possibilities in front of them.
To round off the day, all students will come together for a scenic Thames river cruise—an SBC favourite. As the boat winds its way through central London, past Tower Bridge, the London Eye, and other landmarks, students get a moment to relax, take in the views, and enjoy each other’s company in a different setting.
Throughout all these activities, the mood on campus has remained warm and enthusiastic. It’s clear that students are not only enjoying themselves but also learning how to work together across cultures, think creatively under unusual circumstances, and make the most of every opportunity—rain or shine.
As we move deeper into the summer, week four has continued to show what makes the Earlscliffe experience so special: a balance of educational discovery, social connection, and joyful spontaneity. From cardboard car races to riverside sunsets, the memories being made are ones that will last well beyond the summer.
