SUMMER BOARDING COURSES

Bouncing into Summer: A Warm Welcome to Canford

The first few days at Canford School have offered a brilliant start to summer, marked by clear skies and a sense of excitement in the air. As students arrived on campus from all over the world, there’s been a natural mix of travel tiredness and growing anticipation. The atmosphere has gradually shifted from relaxed and sleepy on arrival day to energetic and enthusiastic as everyone begins to settle in.

On arrival day, the pace was gentle and welcoming. A few early arrivals kept the atmosphere light, enjoying name games, crafts, and movies while waiting for more students to join throughout the day. There was a quiet sense of curiosity as friendships began to form in the background of board games and impromptu sports. For those who arrived in the evening, delivery pizza was on hand, making it a low-key but comforting start. Instead of diving into evening house games, students were given space to unpack and settle into their rooms, helping them feel at home from the start.

As the sun continued to shine, the first full day of camp began with a sense of fresh possibility. The warm weather added to the summer feeling, even if it meant students occasionally needed shade and a bit of rest. Academically, the first day of classes was a lively one. In Business, students were challenged to build towers using only spaghetti and marshmallows, introducing teamwork and problem-solving in a playful way. In Art, the focus turned to creativity and technique – sketching fruits, exploring how abstract words like “crash”, “boom”, and “smooth” could be represented visually, and experimenting with various pencils and chalks. Science classes got straight to work on understanding electric circuits, while English sessions started confidently, with students diving straight into lessons.

Wellbeing and social time remained a key part of the day, with a range of activities on offer including nature walks, football, bracelet making, crafts, board games, and tennis. Students were able to choose two activities based on their interests and energy levels, allowing for a balance of movement and calm. A thoughtful touch came during morning break, when staff handed out ice lollies – a refreshing treat that kept spirits high in the heat.

By the third day, the energy on campus had fully bloomed. There was a tangible buzz in the air as students looked forward to the Fête – an inflatable-filled afternoon that became a highlight of the week. With seven different blow-ups including a maze, jumping castle, axe throwing (soft and safe!), bull ride, helter skelter, and sumo wrestling, it was a lively and memorable event. Despite the heat, students joined in with laughter and energy, though many were ready for some shade after tackling obstacle courses and inflatable challenges.

Later that evening, the Highland Games brought a joyful end to the day. Staff went all out, donning Scottish bonnets and face paint, which added a festive feel to the experience. Students moved around in groups trying classic challenges like the egg and spoon race, welly toss, face painting, and themed sports like rugby and football passing. It was an evening full of camaraderie and colour, showing just how quickly this group of students has begun to bond.

These first few days have seen the beginning of friendships, the start of academic exploration, and lots of shared laughter. With students coming from different corners of the world, it’s been heartening to see how quickly they are connecting through shared experiences – whether it’s building marshmallow towers, painting words, or toppling over in sumo suits. As the week continues, the strong sense of community already forming on campus promises a summer full of memorable moments.
