SUMMER BOARDING COURSES
Big Ideas and Linen Suits
The past couple of days at Earlscliffe have been a wonderful reflection of what summer learning can be—lively, social, and full of discovery. As we moved through mid-July, the campus has been basking in sunshine, and the atmosphere has responded in kind. There’s a real energy in the air, fuelled by growing friendships, outdoor activities, and the excitement that comes with settling into a new rhythm away from home.
On campus, the sense of community is becoming more visible each day. Students are branching out, mixing across nationalities, and forming friendships that reflect the inclusive, international environment we aim to foster. One member of staff shared how uplifting it has been to see this happen so naturally, with students showing real curiosity and openness in getting to know one another. Whether during free time or group activities, there’s been a noticeable ease in the way they connect—laughing in the garden, sitting together for meals, or teaming up for sports and workshops.
A standout session this week came from the drama activity, where students were asked to perform short scenes based on imaginative summaries written by their teachers. One memorable prompt was: “NASA spaceship stuck in space after lift-off and they can’t come home.” With scenarios like this, students were encouraged to think creatively, work together, and explore expressive performance. It was fantastic to see the different interpretations take shape, each one delivered with a mix of humour, thought, and teamwork. The activity was not only fun but also helped build confidence and communication skills in a relaxed, playful setting.
Midweek brought a shift of scenery with a much-anticipated trip to London. Spirits were high from the moment the coaches left campus, and the day didn’t disappoint. The group visited some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, including Big Ben, and later enjoyed shopping in Sloane Square. The outing offered a great opportunity for cultural engagement, with students taking in the architecture, sounds, and pace of London. One highlight that caught everyone’s attention was a student from Kazakhstan turning up for the day out in a very smart linen suit—an unexpected but stylish moment that had everyone smiling. The students appreciated the balance of structure and independence, and many returned eager to share stories of what they’d seen, eaten, and bought.
Back on site, wellbeing continues to be at the heart of the daily schedule. Outdoor activities have flourished thanks to the good weather, and students have been making the most of the space, from spontaneous games in the garden to relaxed conversations on the benches and lawns. Even simple moments—like an impromptu football match or friends gathering to chat in the sunshine—have added to the overall sense of ease and enjoyment that defines the current atmosphere.
As the week draws on, it’s clear that students are not just settling in—they’re thriving. With each new day, they’re learning more about each other, about life in the UK, and about themselves. Whether in the classroom, exploring a new city, or simply sharing a laugh in the sunshine, the experience continues to build in value. Parents can feel confident that their children are not only safe and well looked after, but also actively engaged in something truly meaningful.
