SUMMER BOARDING COURSES
A Joyful Start to Summer School Life
Sunday marked the beginning of an exciting chapter at our Headington campus, as we welcomed students from around the world to kick off their summer at SBC. It was Arrivals Day, and the atmosphere was brimming with energy, curiosity, and warm introductions.
From the early morning at 9 AM through to the evening hours, our team was on hand to greet students and families as they arrived. With check-in running until 10 PM, there was plenty of time to ensure every student felt welcomed and settled. The Headington site, with its five cosy boarding houses and excellent facilities including tennis courts, a swimming pool, an indoor sports hall, a purpose-built teaching block, theatre and canteen, provided the perfect setting for students to begin making it their home away from home.
The weather has been kind, adding to the cheerful mood on campus. Sunshine and mild temperatures meant students could explore the grounds comfortably and enjoy outdoor activities without interruption. Luggage was unpacked slowly and steadily as students moved into their houses, taking the time to personalise their rooms and connect with their new housemates. These moments—small as they may seem—are key to helping students feel grounded and at ease during their first day away from home.
Meal times proved to be another highlight. Lunch in the canteen featured a comforting choice of vegan, vegetarian, and meat lasagna, along with freshly prepared salads and puddings. For students arriving later in the day, a range of snacks was laid out by the team—a thoughtful touch that didn’t go unnoticed and was quickly appreciated by hungry travellers.
As the afternoon unfolded, our Activity Leaders led a series of icebreaker games designed to encourage laughter, interaction, and a natural way to start building friendships. Classic activities like ‘Splat’, the ‘Name Game’, and ‘Two Truths, One Lie’ filled the spaces with smiles and laughter. One of the standout moments came during a house game of ‘Name the Car’, which saw impressive participation and revealed a surprising depth of car knowledge among students—only a handful opted to sit out, which speaks volumes about their confidence and willingness to engage on Day One.
In the evening, students gathered in their houses for a welcome meeting. These meetings introduced them not only to house staff but also to the structure of their summer experience. One exciting announcement was the launch of the new ‘House Points’ system. It’s a light-hearted yet motivating way to encourage participation throughout the programme, rewarding students for getting involved in everything from academic work to social events. The house with the most points at the end of the course will win a special prize—though it’s clear that the real reward will be the shared memories and friendships that grow along the way.
Already, there’s a sense of community forming at Headington. Students are getting to know each other, staff are offering guidance and support, and the campus itself is coming to life with conversations in multiple languages, shared laughter, and the buzz of new possibilities.
