SUMMER BOARDING COURSES
A Day of Preparation, Play, and Performance
The final weekend of July at Headington has been full of energy, with students throwing themselves into a wide range of activities while building anticipation for their upcoming Time to Shine presentations. The campus has been alive with movement and music, with a distinctly warm and supportive atmosphere developing as students encouraged each other through rehearsals, fun, and plenty of laughter. Despite a few passing showers, the weather did nothing to dampen the mood; if anything, the change in pace gave students more opportunities to enjoy some of the creative indoor options on offer, with bursts of sunshine providing the perfect excuse for refreshing dips in the pool or a game of basketball outdoors.
Most of the academic focus has centred around preparation for the Time to Shine showcase, which is now just around the corner. These presentations give students a platform to share what they’ve been working on in their classes, and this final stretch has been all about rehearsals, refinement, and building the confidence to take to the stage. The lecture theatre became a lively hub of activity as students fine-tuned their speeches, performances, and creative projects. It was heartening to see how naturally support flowed between students, who not only practised their own parts but also gave each other feedback, encouragement, and often a round of applause. The collaborative spirit has been a strong feature of this period, showing just how much students have grown as individuals and as part of a group.
Outside the classroom, students had plenty of opportunity to relax and recharge. Swimming sessions were especially popular, offering a cooling and active break from rehearsals. Those who preferred a quieter pace gathered for a casual paper aeroplane challenge, all while a light-hearted film played in the background. This provided the ideal setting for downtime—still sociable, still creative, but with a gentle energy that gave everyone space to reset. Over at the arts and crafts station, there was no shortage of imagination as students worked on personal projects, and the basketball court offered a more active alternative for those keen to keep moving.
As the day turned into evening, the entire campus came together for one of the most anticipated events of the week: the Staff Safari. The evening kicked off with a house scavenger hunt that saw students racing around the school grounds in search of hidden logos. Laughter and footsteps echoed across the campus as teams collaborated to track down their tokens, each one bringing them closer to vital house points. Once the tokens were counted, the next part of the challenge began—this time with staff taking on the role of wild animals, hiding across the site for students to locate.
This second stage demanded strategy and teamwork as students raced to find their assigned mascots, navigate obstacle courses, and bring them back to safety. It was a joyful, high-energy finish to the day that had everyone smiling—students, staff, and even a few particularly convincing ‘animals’. The enthusiasm and determination shown by each group was a reflection of just how comfortable and connected everyone has become at Headington.
