Our Staff

The People Behind Our Programmes

Behind every SBC programme is a carefully selected team of educators, residential staff and activity leaders who support students from arrival through to departure. They are the adults students learn from, live alongside and turn to throughout their time with us.

A structured team around every student

At Summer Boarding Courses, our people are at the heart of everything we do. Across all campuses, our teams are built around experience, professionalism and approachability. Students quickly get to know the staff around them, creating an environment where they feel comfortable asking questions, joining activities and settling into daily life away from home.

Drawn from backgrounds including education, boarding, childcare, sport, welfare, and youth leadership, our teams bring both professional expertise and cultural sensitivity. Every member of staff embodies SBC’s core values of respect, inclusion, curiosity, care, and fun—ensuring students feel safe, supported, and inspired throughout their summer.

This layered approach ensures students are consistently supported across academic, social and residential settings rather than relying on a single point of contact.

Our Hiring Approach

Carefully selected for experience, character and responsibility

Our staff are appointed through a rigorous and competitive recruitment process. Each year, we review a high volume of applications, selecting only those who meet SBC’s expectations for professionalism, reliability and suitability for working with young people.

We look beyond experience alone, seeking professionals with strong judgement, excellent communication skills, and a genuine commitment to young people’s wellbeing. Cultural fit is essential—our staff naturally embody SBC’s values and understand the responsibility of caring for children in a residential, international environment.

Safeguarding checks that underpin every appointment

Safeguarding sits at the centre of our recruitment process. All staff complete an interview and are subject to Enhanced DBS checks alongside the provision of at least two references before appointment.

These measures form part of the verification process that ensures every member of staff has been appropriately screened and assessed prior to working with students, providing families with confidence in the people supporting their child throughout their stay.

Preparing staff for academic and pastoral care

Every member of staff takes part in comprehensive training both online and on-site to ensure they are fully prepared to deliver a safe, enriching, and unforgettable summer.

Our training covers essential topics such as safeguarding, child protection, and working with international young people, as well as practical guidance on creating inclusive, engaging experiences for all. We go beyond the basics, offering innovative and extensive sessions designed to build confident, capable teams. Training includes behaviour management, safeguarding in practice, scenario-based workshops, responding to welfare concerns, supporting homesick students, managing group dynamics, and ensuring consistent, high-quality care in a residential international setting.

A clear support structure across campus life

Students encounter different staff members throughout the day, depending on where they are and what they are doing.

In lessons, academic staff guide learning and classroom engagement. Within residences, pastoral provide supervision and support routines such as wake-ups, evening activities and lights-out. Our Social staff facilitate sports, creative sessions and excursions, helping students explore beyond the classroom. And our Leadership teams coordinate operations and remain visible throughout the programme.

Together, these roles create continuity of supervision and familiarity for students as they move between activities.

Confidence in the people around your child

Choosing a summer programme involves trust in the people who will be around your child each day. At SBC, our staffing model is built to provide that confidence through careful selection, clear roles, thorough preparation and consistent on-site presence. Students are supported by a team rather than an individual, meaning there is always someone available to guide, supervise and respond when needed. This collective approach helps create an environment where students feel secure, understood and ready to make the most of their summer experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your child will be supported by a dedicated campus team throughout their time with us. This includes experienced academic staff, residential house staff who live on site with students, activity leaders, and senior management overseeing each programme.

Together, the team provides continuous supervision, guidance and pastoral care across lessons, accommodation and daily activities, helping students feel safe, supported and confident as they settle into campus life.

All staff are recruited through a careful and structured selection process designed for a residential environment with young people. We look for individuals with relevant experience, strong judgement and a genuine ability to support students from an international community.

Before joining the programme, staff are interviewed, complete safeguarding checks including an Enhanced DBS, and provide two references. This process ensures that every member of the team is well prepared for the responsibility of working with students and contributing positively to the campus environment.

Yes. Students interact with staff throughout the day in lessons, in their accommodation and during activities, so there is always a familiar adult nearby if they need help or simply want to talk.

Each campus also has a dedicated Welfare Manager whose role is to support student wellbeing and provide a point of contact for any concerns. Alongside this, all staff receive safeguarding training and are expected to be attentive to students who may need extra reassurance or support during the programme. This means students can speak to the Welfare Manager or any trusted member of staff at any time.

Yes. Staff are present throughout the day and evening, not only during lessons. Residential teams and activity leaders supervise social activities, excursions and time in accommodation so students always have support nearby.

Campus management staff are also on site and available to check in with students. This structure means there are experienced staff present across all parts of the programme, both inside and outside the classroom.

Each campus is led by an experienced management team responsible for the smooth running of the programme and the overall student experience. They coordinate the academic, residential and activities teams, ensuring students are supported across all aspects of campus life.
Many members of the management team return to SBC year after year. This continuity means they are already familiar with the programme, the standards we expect and the needs of international students. It also helps create well-organised campuses where staff work confidently together and students quickly feel settled and supported.
